What to target in Ascended Heroes

The top 10 cards are 77% of the set’s $4,119.00 estimated singles cost — plan these first and the rest follows on a normal budget.

The value math here is stark: roughly four-fifths of this set's total chase cost is locked in its ten priciest cards, and even within that group the money clusters at the peak. Mega Gengar ex, both Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rares, Mega Dragonite ex, and the Mega Charizard Y ex Mega Hyper Rare form the high band — these are the cards driving the set's price, and they're also the ones with the deepest collector affection. The Mega ex full-arts and the Pikachu SIRs are the kind of cards people buy to keep, not flip.

Below that top rung, the mid-band tells the more interesting collecting story. Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex, N's Zoroark ex, Lillie's Clefairy ex, and Mega Feraligatr ex are where character collectors and set builders overlap — they cost real money but reward you with the era's best trainer-Pokémon artwork. The second Pikachu ex SIR and the Mega Dragonite ex Mega Hyper Rare round out the group as the "attainable version of a top card" plays. If you're building toward this set, decide early whether you're buying the peak or living in this middle tier, because the two strategies price out very differently.

How Ascended Heroes is built

The smart way to complete Ascended Heroes

Ascended Heroes is a set to attack in layers, not all at once. The 217-card printed base is very doable through sealed product and cheap singles; the trouble is entirely in the 78-card secret tail, where a handful of cards will cost more than everything else combined. The smart approach is to separate the set into 'the base I'll complete' and 'the chases I'll cherry-pick,' and to buy the expensive SIRs and Mega Hyper Rares as deliberate singles purchases rather than hoping packs deliver them.

1. Build the 217-card printed base first using bundles, ETBs, and bulk singles — this is the cheapest, fastest, most satisfying phase.
2. Sort the 78 secrets into tiers: attainable everyday holos and full-arts you can knock out as singles, versus the ten value cards you'll budget for individually.
3. Prioritize the two Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rares and Mega Gengar ex early — they anchor the set and demand is steady.
4. Pick up the mid-band character cards — Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex, N's Zoroark ex, Lillie's Clefairy ex, Mega Feraligatr ex — as singles when prices dip.
5. Save the top-ceiling Mega Charizard Y ex and Mega Dragonite ex chases for last, buying graded or raw depending on your display goals.
6. Decide whether a true master set is your goal before you start — with 78 secrets, this is a long, expensive finish that many collectors intentionally leave open.

Collecting challenges

The difficulty here isn't subtle. Seventy-eight secret rares is one of the largest tails in the modern game, and the value is so concentrated at the top that a nearly-complete set can still be missing its most expensive pieces. There's no booster box for this release either, so you can't lean on a case break to accelerate the base — you're working through ETBs, bundles, and the singles market. Add ten cards over the high-value threshold and thirty-plus above the mid threshold, and a master set becomes a genuine long-haul project rather than a weekend goal.

Singles or sealed?

For Ascended Heroes, sealed product is a fine way to build the base and enjoy the pull experience, but it is a poor way to chase the cards that actually define the set. With value this concentrated at the top and no booster box in the mix, the expected return from opening packs falls well short of the cost of the SIRs and Mega Hyper Rares you're hoping for. The rational path is packs for fun and base-building, singles for anything on the chase list. The live math on this page shows exactly where that line falls.

Which Ascended Heroes cards are worth grading?

Grading only makes sense at the top of this set. The Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rares, Mega Gengar ex, Mega Dragonite ex, and the Mega Charizard Y ex Mega Hyper Rare are the cards where a clean high grade clears the fee and then some — they carry enough raw value and enough collector demand that the gem-mint premium is real. These are also the cards most likely to be bought slabbed for display, which supports the graded market further.

Everywhere else, think twice. The mid-band character cards can justify grading if you already own a pristine copy, but the everyday secrets and base holos rarely return the submission cost. As always, the live EV numbers beside this text tell you which specific cards are worth the fee today — let those guide you rather than grading on sentiment.

Where Ascended Heroes goes from here

The supply picture is shaped by two things: a very large secret-rare tail spread across a lot of opened product, and the absence of a booster box, which pushes collectors toward ETBs, bundles, and the singles market. That combination tends to keep base and mid-tier secrets plentiful and cheap while the true top chases — the Pikachu ex SIRs, Mega Gengar, Mega Charizard Y — stay scarce relative to demand. Character-driven cards from the Mega Evolution era have shown durable collector interest, and Pikachu and Charizard names rarely go quiet.

The honest risk is reprint exposure and the sheer depth of this set: with 78 secrets, attention and money concentrate on a handful of names while the long tail stays soft indefinitely. That caps broad appreciation but supports the idea that value here lives in specific cards, not the set as a whole. Buy the pieces you love at the top, treat the rest as a collecting project, and don't confuse a deep set with a deep-value one. Not financial advice — collect what you love first.
