Paldea Evolved landed in mid-2023 as the second full expansion of the Scarlet & Violet era, and it did what those early SV sets did best: it went big. With a printed run of 193 cards ballooning to a total near 279 once you count the secret rares, this is a set built around depth. The Scarlet & Violet template — Pokémon ex replacing V, the return of full-art Trainers, and the now-signature Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare tiers — is on full display here, and Paldea Evolved leaned into it with one of the largest secret-rare pools of its year.
The star of the show is a Magikarp Illustration Rare that became one of the most beloved art cards of the entire era. It's a simple, gorgeous piece — a school of Magikarp rendered with a warmth that made it an instant favorite — and it pulls a disproportionate share of the set's value on its own. Right behind it sit a Raichu and a Tyranitar Illustration Rare that collectors genuinely chase for the artwork, plus the Maushold IR that became a quiet fan favorite. The Special Illustration Rare tier delivers the trainer-gallery goods too: Iono headlines as the era's breakout support character, joined by Chi-Yu ex and Tinkaton ex in their full-art glory.
For a set this size, the value is remarkably concentrated — roughly half the cost of chasing the top cards lives in just a handful of them, with Magikarp doing a lot of the heavy lifting. That's the shape of most modern SV sets, but Paldea Evolved is a cleaner example than most: a couple of true standouts, a healthy middle band of desirable IRs, and a long tail of ex cards and full arts that fill out the binder without breaking the bank.
Among collectors, Paldea Evolved is remembered fondly precisely because of that Magikarp. It gave the set an identity beyond "the big early SV expansion," and the Iono SIR cemented it as a set worth revisiting. The starter Illustration Rares — Sprigatito, Fuecoco (and their line) — also give newer Paldea fans a reason to dig in.
